Nigeria — Nigeria’s military says it has killed “scores” of alleged Islamic militants in punishing air raids on a “terrorist camp” as it pursues a state of emergency against an Islamic uprising in the northeast.
Spokesman Capt. Eli Lazarus said Thursday this week’s aerial bombardments follow an attack in which suspected Islamic extremists killed at least 43 students Sunday at an agricultural college in Yobe state.
Lazarus said 15 people arrested in the raids were being interrogated and had provided information that could help track down others.
He said the military was considering new strategies to confront the insurgency led by the Boko Haram network that wants to abolish Western education and install an Islamic state in Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer with a population roughly divided between Christians and Muslims.
